ooh .. testing! while working on the next page i made a quick demonstration for a friend on how i painted those light from below panels, and thought.. hey.. why not try and see if dA still has those.. video categories.
unfortunatly.. for some reason it doesent want to upload my video file.. so yeah.. go to youtube to view it instead :/
[link]i dunno if people will find it usefull or not but is a very simple technique. for those who use photoshop, just make a layer and fill the area using a soft brush. then areas where its supposed to be highlighted.. just erase witn an eraser using a sharp brush.
original time that took for this image is 10 minutes.

ammmm , I have question can you give me advice how to draw "expressions" ...
I know that practice and hard work is fundamental for everything , but nevertheless can you give me a hint or something ...
because I have no idea how to start ...
for instance a smile will lift the cheeks up, and will also shrink the eyes and into a sort of line. an angry expression that shows teeth will strech the cheek muscles to the side. also nose will widen and there will be wrinkles in the arcade area in the middle beween the eyebrows.
for the face expressions you need to observe the anatomy of the face.
also another usefull thing for expressions is to watch how people behave in public. for instance if you go out with your friends, try observing their gestures when they talk or explain things. expressions are achieved not only on the face but also in body language.
a person will make different gesture when is talking about something that bothers them, or if they talk about something sad, and differently when they are excited or happy. if a person is nervous or insecure about something (or perhaps shy)observe thir overall stance. their shoulders tend to be pointed downwards, their hands are pulled in sometimes folding their palms on their knees, they might even hold something in their hands(like a crumpled piece of paper) and mangle it XD thir head might be cowered a bit etc.
you can also observe random strangers. (people casually walking down the street, people waiting for a bus...take a look: is person paitently waiting or is he or she constaly looking at their watch, nervously pacing. the world is full of resources and it teaches us alot)
you can do those things whwnever you have a bit of free time. when you go to the store to pick up groceries, or when you are taking a walk or even returning home from work, or any time you are outside . it will vastly enrichen your knowledge and it will make drawing expressions much easily because you will understand the behaviour behind it.
Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it... I will definitely try the thing with the mirror, I don't think I will be able to catch every little detail right from the start ... but hey I guess this is how you build a style ... right
Thanks again you are the best.
